The centre of Ambert is anchored by the unusual silhouette of its circular town hall. Built in 1816 as a grain market, it moved trading activity out of the church nave. Nearby streets retain timber-framed façades that recall the prosperous late-medieval town, once protected by a ring of defensive towers.
In the shaded valleys around the town, the Batifol and Lagat streams powered paper mills for centuries. This craft carried Ambert’s reputation far beyond Auvergne. At the still-working Moulin Richard-de-Bas, cotton and linen rags continue to be transformed into sheets of paper using traditional skills, water power and wooden mallets.
The Church of Saint-Jean, built between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, overlooks the old centre with its Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Ambert also holds a place in French literary life: Jules Romains set part of Les Copains here, while Henri Pourrat, Alexandre Vialatte and composer Emmanuel Chabrier remain closely associated with the town and its surroundings.
