Le Monestier to Le Puy-en-Velay via La Chaise-Dieu

Starts and ends: Le Monestier

Le Monestier to Le Puy-en-Velay via La Chaise-Dieu

This day trip from Le Monestier to Le Puy-en-Velay follows a memorable route through La Chaise-Dieu and Allègre, connecting the quiet landscapes of the Livradois-Forez with some of Auvergne’s most distinctive historic places.

Leaving the gîtes, the road winds south through forests, high plateaux and small mountain communities. The journey is part of the experience: a gradual passage from the wooded hills around Le Monestier towards the volcanic landscapes of the Velay.

The first major stop is La Chaise-Dieu. Its imposing Gothic abbey rises above the village and offers a remarkable introduction to the religious, artistic and musical heritage of the region. Allow time to explore the abbey quarter and the surrounding streets before continuing south.

At Allègre, the remains known as La Potence overlook the village and the wider Velay landscape. Nearby Mont Bar, an extinct volcano, gives this part of the journey a landscape quite unlike the forested country around Le Monestier. It is a peaceful place to pause, walk and enjoy the view before continuing towards Le Puy-en-Velay.

Le Puy-en-Velay provides a dramatic final destination. The historic town occupies an ancient volcanic basin, where chapels, statues and other landmarks rise above terracotta rooftops on steep volcanic formations. Its cathedral and religious heritage also connect the town with the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The return journey leads back across the plateaux towards Le Monestier. In the softer evening light, the forests and distant summits offer a quiet conclusion to a full day of history, landscape and discovery in Auvergne.
